If you listen to radio of late, you can see why some of us think a lot of current music just doesn’t make a lot of sense. Lines don’t seem to need to rhyme, sentences don’t seem to need to be connected, and music and rhythms can jump all over the map. If this new style is something you’d like to play around with, here are a few ideas to get you started.

Freeform Lyrics Can Be Fun

Many of us have studied the work of E. E. Cummings, and, for that matter, The Doors. Just as an exercise, try writing some really poetic line describing something you are feeling or sensing right now. Now write another line, just like the last. Add a few more, just for fun – they don’t have to rhyme, be the same length, or even be about the same subject. Now try matching them up to some music you might have lying around, or just rapping them out along with a drum track.

This may take a little getting used to, and you may find you don’t like it, but just the effort of trying something new may, at the very least, inspire you to rewrite what you just composed in a way that does rhyme and have more of a rhythmic flow. In jazz and many other song forms, though, if the lyric is a little short, just add a lot of adlib notes to it and have fun stretching those syllables for all they’re worth.

Have Fun Just Writing Riffs

Some of the best rock songs have been written by just coming up with a really hooky riff, and adding other hooky riffs after it, then repeating what you’ve created, or adding more fun goodies to go with your new ideas. In a lot of current music, though, you can have fun trading off those hooks with several different instruments, in sort of a call-and-response sort of way, so it sounds like they are having a musical conversation. In a lot of jazz, the instruments take turns in the spotlight, so you can even just have a meeting of folks in your group and tell each to come up with a neat music figure for the next practice, then all take turns playing them.

As appropriate, you might try changing keys, or asking everyone to come in with stuff in one key in particular. Sometimes, though, just modulating to another key or mode can accidentally create a great turning point in the song you are jamming out, so you might even try just leaving things as they are and just taping the session to come back and listen to at some later time. You can always just tweak the song on the computer until you like it, but, if your group has worked together any time at all, you might be really pleased with just what you folks come up with on a moment’s whim.

Is the mission of music to better humankind? Not necessarily, though messages in the music created by Jon Anderson (lyricist/front man for Yes) and avant garde composer Vangelis inspire us to see the world from an altruistic perspective. Remember “We Are the World”? Written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie in 1985, the song was influential enough to have two artist-studded releases 25 years apart.

There are those who’ll say that music, in and of itself, betters humankind. I’m one of them. And thankfully, today’s method of distribution for music has leveled the playing field, so thought-provoking indie bands are having their say—in a big way. The debut album of Six Elements, aptly named Primary
Elements, definitely has something to say, a distinct way to say it, with a couple of progressive-rock greats adding to the conversation.

Wise Words

Stanley Whitaker (Happy the Man, Oblivion Sun) and Dave DeMarco (Oblivion Sun, Battery Apple) join eyboardist/composer Michael (Misha) Shengaout in reminding us of powerful ideals for living expressed so eloquently in Rudyard Kipling’s famous poem “If”. You might have had to memorize it in high school—“If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you.” The poem not only sparked Shengaout’s quest for the purpose in life’s ups and downs and how to face them with integrity, Kipling’s classic was the genesis of the music.

The poem “If” set to music is the album’s centerpiece, and the band applies the same harmonic treatment to William Henley’s poem “Invictus”. (The film “Invictus” with Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman refers to the poem in the title. If you want to be the master of your fate and the captain of your soul, it’s worth the read.) The entire album advances a thought-provoking idea—that the harmonies of music can help us see the harmonies in life if we can look past the frenetic daily grind, our personal challenges and the woes of the world. Raise your hand if you think we can all use a heavy dose of that wisdom.

Rock Meets “Rach”

I’m particularly intrigued by their musical influences—shades of Pink Floyd’s sweet guitars, Peter Gabriel and early Genesis, beautifully infused with the symphonic styles of Russian composers Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky—proving that seemingly disparate grooves can come together to produce rich, ear-worthy harmonies. The core band, along with a couple of session musicians, all contributed a share of their soul to the album as well.

Whitaker, a cancer survivor, translates the emotional effects of his life experience into moving vocals. Jeff McGahren, who put his faith in the concept album as soon as he learned about it, unleashes his guitar talents. Misha Shengaout, on keyboards and samples, composed much of the music and lives up to his potential in many ways—this project is a dream his positivity made real. Renowned bassist Dave DeMarco sat in on the session as did Marc Norgaard on drums. The result speaks for itself.

If you’re into progressive rock, you should check out the Six Elements web site. It tells their story better than I ever could and expands on the motivation behind their music. It deserves to be heard.

###

Susan Hawkins is a writer for online literary magazine All Things If, a longtime fan of indie bands and a great believer in the message Six Elements hopes to deliver .

I’ve just found nice cover. This girl Laue Baker made quite a lot of covers, mostly with drums but some with piano. The comment to this video says: “Just wanna say that Lady Gaga
is the new generation … in all the ways…
She have the courage to do things I didn’t do…
I love her ”

She plays drums since childhood and I think if she wants to join some music band and start playing their music they can achieve big success. She is Canadian, but as she says on one of her videos she would like to be German. So to continue with our POKER FACE topic – you can like her on Laue Baker’s FACE book page or spielen poker with her.

A five piece band from the North Cotswolds, Souljacker have earned the reputation of representing Classic Rock in a classy manner. The band’s sheer hard work and raw talent create their accomplished sound. Grooving bass, BIG drums, funky keyboards, pure guitar solos and gritty powerful vocals are what Souljacker are about. The band showcase their musical ablity from the bluesy ‘Moonshine’ and full on rock ‘Eat My Dust’ to the smooth classic ‘Oracle Bones’. ‘This band looks like it absolutely loves to play together, and the joy is infectious’.

Originally formed by Patrick Burley (guitar/vocals), Rowan Mayo (bass) and Josh Catling (drums) as ‘Devious Steve’ in September 2004, the band rapidly built up an enthusiastic following in the Oxon/Glos area playing their own rock tracks. In the summer of 2005 they appeared on the Riverside Stage at the Oxford Cornbury Festival and the acclaim they won there inspired them to continue developing their brand of original material, renaming as Souljacker in late 2005 with guitarist Hamish Denny on board. In 2006 they were joined by keyboard player Robbie Moore and their song writing has since gone from strength to strength. ‘Musically, each band member brings something to the party, but none of them fall into the trap of gratuitous soloing. To them the song is king, and they band together to deliver it within an inch of its life’.

Ultimate Guitar voted Souljacker Best Unsigned Band for March 2008 and named it one of their Band’s of the Year for 2008. Souljacker was also this year’s winner of the Mooncalf Battle of the Bands competition, which was entered by nearly 300 bands nationwide. The band have achieved airplay on Kerrang Radio, Rock Radio UK and Rock Radio USA. This year has seen the band nominated for two awards in the Exposure Music Awards. ‘Oracle Bones’ was nominated for Best Blues/Jazz song and the band was also nominated for Best Live Act. The band is also taking part in The Surface Unsigned 2009 and has already reached Stage 2 which takes place in May. ‘I have no doubt that Souljacker will impact heavily onto a larger musical world which is lacking good, classic rock and roll’.

“HAYDAMAKY have set a new European trend in Ukrainian music. The band has its own alternative identity, a base of genuine Ukrainian folk music and a distinct social message formed by a group of high level professional musicians. It is an intellectual ethno-system, an example of lively world music culture with elements of modern Kozak rock, dub, punk, reggae, ska, and historic Ukrainian and Balkan music treasures.

The band was formed at a time of world-changing events and the emergence of the Ukrainian national consciousness. Haydamaky soon left the underground stage, but instead of merging with the Ukrainian music elite or playing for the diaspora, they went further on to gain Europe’s favour. Haydamaky’s audience grew from random passers-by in the streets of Berlin to crowds numbering in the thousands at the world’s largest music festivals such as Lowlands, Mundial, and Przystanek Woodstock. The band’s albums are released in Ukraine, England, Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Russia by one of the four major music labels – EMI, and WOMEX Top Label award winning EASTBLOCK, Germany. Their concert performances extend from the Black Sea to the Norwegian Sea covering Baltic and Roman-Germanic countries, bringing together the minds and ideas of people from all over the world. ” (more at Haydamaky’s official web-site

COMEG are an original Rock band from SW England
COMEG are
Coemgen Savage – Vocals
Roger Pearson – Guitar
Spencer Jones – Bass
David Cartwright – Drums

COMEG began in 2002
Their first self produced album was released in 2003 and they have since recorded 6 more albums. All albums are freely available to download from the band’s website.

COMEG would describe their sound as infectiously addictive and anthemic. They have been compared to legends such as U2, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Zeppelin, The Cult, and Primal Scream .

COMEG has also written several tunes for independent movies. The band are also played on both local and international radio stations and Podcasts.

Between them, the band members have decades of Live experience and professionalism, having played in different bands all over the country in many different genres. Drummer Dave has played with professional orchestras and also depped for some well known acts, he is also in local covers band The Edge. Bassist Spencer also plays with popular Devon band “House Of Kane”. Guitarist Roger Pearson has toured with band “Diverted Traffic” and Vocalist Comeg previously fronted Bristol Rock band “Twisted” and was Bono in U2 tribute band “TRIBU2E”

REVIEWS THE BAND HAVE RECEIVED

Comeg have some serious talent. Weighty, bombastic anthems pour out of them like tap water. ~ Backbone – 247 Magazine

These guys create not just songs but sonic landscapes – www.bandassist.co.uk

To listen to “Touched With Fire”, you would never suspect that it had been produced by an independent musician who began recording eight years ago in his Devonshire basement. Clearly the School of Home Studio paid off as each beat of the drum, strum of the guitar and thud of the bass is so crisp, George Martin himself could have produced it -

http://www.live-music-scene.co.uk/cd-reviews-content.asp?id=244

“Comeg’s songs (One Day) are hook-laden, riff-loaded, emotionally charged works that tend to get right under your skin and haunt you for ages after.” ~ Toxic Pete – Toxicpete.co.uk

” …the melodic sweetness of McCartney, the clever, edgy lyrics of Lennon, and the upfront sexuality of the Stones. All wrapped in a production style that reminds me of Jeff Lynne / ELO. What’s not to love” ~ Godsofmusic.com

“Move over U2! This is suberb……great, great pro track…one that you want to play again…and again!” ~ MusiciansTogether.com
